Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Project in Boston/Cambridge, MA 

A Design‐Build project comprised of a historic 11-span open spandrel steel arch structure with two steel stringer approach spans founded on timber pile-supported concrete and masonry abutments and piers. The bridge was rehabilitated and restored in stages while maintaining the MBTA Red Line Transit Service and southbound vehicular traffic as well as pedestrian, bicycle, and recreational and commercial boating traffic during all stages of construction. The bridge structure, including the MBTA reservation was repaired and rehabilitated in place using steel plates, angles, and high-strength steel bolts similar in appearance to rivets of the original construction. The masonry abutments and piers were seismically reinforced by the addition of reinforced concrete within the vaults of the substructures. The internal reinforced concrete was connected to the supporting pile caps and masonry walls and now supports the deck structure above it. J.S.
